2021 Bank Holiday Removal Bill Gets The Nod In The Senate After Much Debate

The Grenada Senate has endorsed the move by the Government for the removal of the 2021 Bank Holidays normally associated with carnival.

The Legislation to the effect was given the nod at a meeting of the Upper House yesterday, in essence, banning carnival this year, the second year running, in the quest to control the COVID pandemic on our shores.

The debate on the matter, however, was raging, with special references being made concerning the need for people to understand that vaccination is a pathway to normalcy; the notion of personal responsibility; laying a level playing field when allowing permission for the staging of activities, as well as leaders showing example.

The Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Simon Stiel, did indicate that the measure taken this year in the face of situations with COVID-19 in neighboring countries and around the World at this time is the right thing to do.

The man representing Labour, Senator Andre Lewis, while having no problems with the Legislation, noted that there are too many areas of double standards in the execution of COVID policies.

He believes different privileges are granted to personality favorites when it comes to permissions for gatherings at activities, usually encouraging the public to take dissenting view, a notion that easily invokes rebellion.

He says politicians are sometimes caught in the mix.
