GTAWU Summonds GRENLEC Workers To Emergency Meeting

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers‘ Union (GTAWU) has summoned all its members at the Grenada Electricity Services Limited to an emergency meeting to be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Company‘s compound at the Dusty Highway car park from 0800 hrs.

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers‘ Union and Grenada Electricity Services Limited have been meeting to try to reach agreement on amendments to the existing Collective Labour Agreement.

The Union and Company arrived at a settlement on salary increases before the Minister for Labour on May 16, 2022. It was agreed that the parties will meet to continue negotiations towards completing the other amendments to the Collective Labour Agreement.

On May 24, 2022, TAWU wrote GRENLEC proposing to meet on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. On Wednesday, June 1, 2022, the Union received an email (sent during the night of May 31, 2022) from the Company indicating their inability to meet on June 1, 2022, without proposing an alternative date.

June 1, 2022, GTAWU responded proposing that the parties meet on or before Tuesday, June 7, 2022, for the continuation of negotiations, failing which the Union and workers will have no other option than to take whatever action(s) as may be deemed necessary. The Company then proposed to meet on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, for the continuation of negotiations, to which the Union agreed.

When the parties met today Wednesday, June 8, 2022, the Company advised that it was not yet in a position to engage in negotiations for amendments to the Collective Labour Agreement since the Board of Directors has not met to give them guidance.

The Union views this as a deliberate attempt by the Company to delay the negotiations and as such an urgent meeting has been scheduled with all GRENLEC workers for tomorrow morning, Thursday, June 9, 2022, to give them a report and decide on the way forward.
