OPPOSITION LEADER VOICES CONCERN OVER RUSH TO REMOVE STREET-SIDE VENDORS

Leader of the opposition, former Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, expresses concern over what he calls the recent arbitrary and rushed move by the ruling Administration to remove all street-side vendors, as well as those located at the Stadium car park to the St. George’s Market.

REPORT:

Dr. Mitchell’s sentiments on the issue were published today and while he acknowledges that sidewalk vending is a problem, he speaks of being deeply troubled by what he termed the heartless and arrogant manner in which the process is being pursued.

Government, he says, should ensure that any of the decisions it makes, must take into consideration the plight of the poor and vulnerable citizens of the country.

Dr. Mitchell says he recognizes the importance of law and order, but also understands the plight of the vendors, who rely on their trade to make a living.

He believes the government has a responsibility to ensure that any decision affecting the livelihoods of its citizens is made in consultation with them, and, in a manner that’s fair and just.

Dr. Mitchell is therefore calling on the Dickon Mitchell Administration to immediately address this problematic situation before livelihoods are put at irredeemable risk.

He believes the vendors have a right to be heard and that their concerns must be taken into account before any action is taken.
