The Independence Day 50th anniversary countdown continues and activities are in full train to the big showdown on 7th February.
A fifty-year time period is always regarded as a milestone that gives credence to any long-standing programme or event.
The anniversary finds its label in what we identify, according to celebratory norms, as a “golden jubilee”.
In the Grenada context, what is even more significant is the struggle the independence planners endured into the process, one where there’s been a lot of opposition political tension that threatened to dampen the significance of moving away from British colonial rule.
But, for the man who stood tall in the scheme of things, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, he was not deterred.
Over the past few weeks of our news productions we have been offering snippets of his speech to a joint sitting of Parliament on Independence Day, 7th February, 1974.
The last time, we were into part 7 of the series and today we present Part 8 via Weefm Radio.
The man considered the Father of the Nation, one-time Prime Minister, Sir Eric Gairy, back in the day of the 7th of February, 1974, speaking to a joint session of the Grenada Parliament.
It was attended by visiting British parliamentary officials and regional dignitaries.
