The Ministry of Health is reporting that there’s a significant increase in the number of gastroenteritis cases observed over the past month, with individuals aged 5 years and over most affected.
REPORT:
Gastroenteritis, commonly known as “gastro”, is caused by infection and inflammation of the digestive tract, by viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
Viruses such as the noro and rota-viruses are the most common. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pains, and nausea.
Gastroenteritis is said to be highly contagious and primarily spreads via the fecal-oral route.
The virus, a release says, may be ingested through contaminated food or water, or by touching a contaminated surface and touching the mouth.
The release goes on to say that children in childcare centers are particularly vulnerable due to their close physical interactions and limited understanding of proper hygiene practices.
Preventive Measures include regular hand washing with soap and water, regularly disinfecting of surfaces and drinking plenty water to prevent dehydration.
In staving off effects of gastro, ensure proper cooking, preparation and storage of food to prevent contamination…Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption, seek medical attention and Isolate.
