Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, confirms that the 2017 Budget will no longer be presented on November 25, as was previously announced.
Instead, according to a release from the Government Information Service, it will be presented sometime in December.
The change is due to the Constitutional Reform Referendum vote, which has been changed from October 27 to 24 November.
Attorney General, Cadjeton Hood, announced that the extended period affords persons more time to become more acquainted and have a better understanding of the 7 bills, which will be put forward to the voters on Referendum Day.
The release says the Referendum has definitely affected the date for the Budget, and if it has to go ahead, it means that Parliament will have to be prorogued, and then everything will be null and void.
According to the writ for the Constitutional Reform Referendum, the Supervisor of Elections has to return the writ to the Governor-General on or before Tuesday, 13th December 2016.
The procedure announced is that after the writ is returned with the result of the referendum, the Grenada Parliament will be immediately prorogued, making way for its ceremonial opening, and then the presentation of the 2017 budget.
