Cocoa and Nutmeg Farmers are said to be registering their interest in an Agricultural Disaster Risk- insurance programme to help secure their harvests in the event of tropical storms and hurricanes; and related wind-associated perils.
The forthcoming Disaster Risk Insurance Programme is being supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Grenada Cocoa Association (GCA) and the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA).
Acting Chief Extension Officer, Lauren St. Louis, explains that registration for the pilot programme tailored specifically for Grenada’s nutmeg and cocoa farmers is ongoing.
Former Extension Officer, Michael Neckles, says farmers have an opportunity to obtain a different experience this time around, as it relates to the impact on the cocoa and nutmeg sectors by Hurricane Ivan.
This, he says, this will help farmers secure their harvests and explore the possibility of going back to cultivating their lands faster, after a hurricane or tropical storm.
Cocoa and nutmeg farmers wishing to be enrolled in the forthcoming Disaster-Risk Insurance Programme are asked to do so by contacting the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry, Marine Resources and Cooperatives.
Farmers have until March 15, 2024 to complete registration.
