Debate On The Government’s Buy-Back Of Grenlec To Go Through Its Final Hurdle

Debate about the Grenada Government repurchasing GRENLEC will take centre stage in the country’s Senate tomorrow.

The Senate will be meeting for the first time in the New Year.

The issue pertaining to the Government buying back GRENLEC has been a topical one, and, with information reaching the public on the subject, the matter was brought before the lower house for debate, when members met for the first time this year.

Tomorrow, in the Senate, a motion is expected to be tabled in this respect.

Based on the arguments put forward it appears that time, era and circumstance have set up the government to opt for liberalization of the energy sector.

WRB was the owner of the majority shares in GRENLEC when purchased by the Miami-based family company in the early 1990’s.

In tabling the motion in the House of Representatives, Bowen intimated that like the telecommunications sector, the time has come for the liberalization of the energy sector for the Nation’s people to be afforded the luxury of cheaper rates.
