The Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Fisheries and Co-operatives assures fishers that it is currently engaged in communications with the Grenada Ports Authority and Grenada Coast Guard, with respect to the two tankers that are loafing north-west outside of Grenada’s territorial waters.
Since receiving reports about the tankers from concerned fishers last Friday, the Ministry immediately initiated contact with the Grenada Ports Authority and Grenada Coast Guard to ensure that the assets of local fishermen are being protected.
The local fishers are concerned that the tankers which have been loafing outside of Grenada’s territorial waters for the past three weeks, can cause possible damage to their long lines.
However, they are also aware that the tankers are entitled to Right of Innocent Passage under international maritime laws.
Officials at the Grenada Ports Authority have since indicated that the vessels are awaiting instructions to proceed to St. Lucia.
As such, the Ministry wishes to advise local fishers and seafarers that there is no need for undue concern.
The Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Fisheries and Co-operatives once again advises all local Fishers and seafarers to be vigilant when venturing out to sea and encourages them to continue to exercise all safety measures and guidelines as outlined in the fisheries legislation of Grenada.
