Five Trinidadians Held In Connection With Carriacou Bank Robbery

The minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Kindra Maturine-Stewart, applauds law enforcement and security forces here whose swift action ensured that the bandits who robbed the Cooperative Bank branch on the sister Isle yesterday are captured.

The robbers, toting guns, held up the bank in the early afternoon hours and made off with an undisclosed sum of cash.

Acting on reports, the police are said to have immediately instituted a dragnet and found out that the bandits escaped by sea.

The Grenada Coast Guard was alerted and a chase ensued and after about two hours on the seas the robbers were captured.

They are reported to be five Trinidadian Nationals.

Mathurine Stewart says the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are heartened by the swift and efficient action of the local police and coast guard, which reflects the improved local security capacity on the island.

She expressed concern, though, that despite efforts in beefing up security, there’s need for a review even further of some of the local security operations.

Mathurine Stewart noted that it’s the second time within two years that the community, while peaceful, has been jolted by a cross border raid by regional criminal elements.

She said she’s thankful that during the dramatic developments yesterday, no one was hurt.

Police say investigations are continuing.

The robbers are in police custody.

Charges are have not yet been laid.
