Former Agriculture Minister, Michael Baptiste, says he doesn’t see any wisdom with the recent passage of the Praedial Larceny Amendment Bill, aimed at dishing out harsher punishment for individuals who steal agricultural crops from farmers and for the protection of sour-sop.
The legislation passed successfully through both houses of Parliament with full support.
It went through its final hurdle in the Senate this week.
Baptiste feels by increasing the penalty for praedial larceny in the courts is by no means helping farmers in any way.
He speaks of a Praedial Larceny Fund established when he was Minister but is today inactive.
Baptiste is hoping it could be revitalized.
