Grenada’s first female parliamentarian, passed away in the United States on Monday.
Lady Cynthia Bernadette Gairy, age 94 was the widow of former Prime Minister and Father of Independence Sir. Eric Matthew Gairy.
She served in Grenada’s Parliament from 1961-1979.
Gairy was the first female to sit in the House of Representatives and was also the first female minister of government in 1968 with responsibility for the ministries she served.
As a government minister she held the portfolios of Community Development and cooperatives, education, culture among others.
Born in St. David in 1923 lady Gairy is survived by her two daughters, Macelle a former Grenada High Commissioner to London and Jennifer.
The funeral mass honoring the life of Lady Cynthia Gairy will be held this Saturday in Georgia; her body is expected to be buried in Grenada.
