GHTA Donates $80,000 EC To Grenada Conservation Fund To Support Woburn Mangrove Ecosystem On Earth Day

On this Earth Day, the Grenada Hotel and Tourismย  Association (GHTA) is proud to announce a significant donation of $80,000 EC dollars toย  the Grenada Conservation Fund. This contribution, made through the Tourismย  Enhancement Fund, will support the construction of a boardwalk and wildlife observationย  platform at the Woburn Mangrove Restoration Site, a project spearheaded by the Grenadaย  Fund for Conservation, Inc. (GFC, Inc.).

The Woburn Mangrove Restoration Site, a vital ecological area, has seen remarkableย  rehabilitation since 2009, achieving over 90% restoration through the planting of diverseย  coastal vegetation such as red and white mangroves, sea grapes, and almonds. The siteย  serves as an Important Birding Area (IBA), featuring on the Caribbean Birding Trail, andย  hosts an annual Caribbean Water-bird Census that has recorded 42 species of resident andย  migratory birds.

Arlene Friday, CEO of the GHTA, expressed the associationโ€™s commitment to sustainableย  tourism and environmental preservation. โ€œWe are thrilled to support this initiative,ย  especially on Earth Day, which reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our planet,โ€ย  Friday stated. โ€œThe boardwalk and observation platform will provide researchers, students,ย  and tourists with improved access to the Woburn Mangrove Ecosystem, promotingย  education and appreciation of our natural heritage.โ€

The proposed boardwalk will be 40 feet long by 4 feet wide, with an 8-foot viewingย  platform. This structure will enhance visibility of the mangrove ecosystem, facilitatingย  better sighting and photography of birds and wildlife, and supporting local livelihoods byย  benefiting Grenadian bird guides. Importantly, the design will accommodate individuals with limited mobility, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. The GHTAโ€™s contribution marksย  a significant step towards realizing this project for the 2025 tourist season. Ms. Friday added. โ€œBy working together, we can ensure that Grenada remains a premier destinationย  while safeguarding our natural environment for future generations.โ€
