Head of the Grenada National Reparations Committee, the GNRC’s Arley Gill, believes the time has come for political leaders to address the issue of republicanism, adding that “Keeping King Charles as the head of state renders us politically immature and justifies the need for a political overseer.’’
It’s all part of discussion with the era of the coronation of King Charles and former British colonized countries assessing their status countries, pondering on the possibility of a new constitutional arrangement such as republicanism.
Gill is quoted as telling the British Mirror publication that “The coronation provides an excellent opportunity for Grenada and other former colonies to cut ties, once and for all, with the British monarchy.’’

The subject is going to take on even greater significance next week with discussion promulgated by the GNRC.
It is its third annual “Reparations Lecture’’ at the Grenada National Museum in St George’s Tuesday, May 23, from 7 to 9 in the evening….The theme, “Republicanism in the Age of Reparations’’.
The keynote speaker is former Grenada attorney general Dr. Francis Alexis, a constitutional expert, who holds a PhD in public law from the University of Cambridge.
It’s expected he’ll focus on the constitutionality of breaking ties with the monarchy, providing new governance meaning that fits within circles of Grenada’s cultural dimensions.
Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, interviewed on Sky News during his visit to Britain for the coronation of King Charles, said he has “hope’’ that the country will become a republic during his leadership; but, he ruled out any concrete constitutional change before 2024.
