The Grenada Government has sent out notice relating to the importation of vehicles ten years and older.
REPORT:
In essence, there’s a ban on the importation of vehicles ten years and older.
And, the Government is reminding the public that the importation of vehicles ten years and older, except those exempted in keeping with SRO. 43/2020, is a breach of the Customs Act and is therefore illegal.
The ban on 10-year-old vehicles took effect January this year, while the government’s allowed grace period has expired.
The public is reminded that the law is now in full effect and is encouraged to take note of this, and be aware that the offense carries stiff penalties.
Importers of these vehicles may be subjected to fines upon conviction of the offence.
All vehicles, 10 years and older, which landed in Grenada after April 5, 2021, will be seized, forfeited to the State, and disposed of accordingly.
Furthermore, the Government will also pursue legal measures to hold shippers, agents, and vessel owners/operators liable for the importation of banned vehicles.
The imposition of the ban on aged vehicles is said to be part of efforts to protect the environment and lower the country’s carbon emissions, also reducing the growing number of derelict vehicles alongside public roadways.
