Grenada’s soil sampling survey has come to an end.

A total of 120 soil samples have been taken which will be sent to UWI Trinidad for further analysis and the results will help provide Grenada with updated soil maps as well as soil properties data for use in National Sustainable development.

The national soil sampling survey fell under component 1 of the 5 component project and was facilitated in collaboration with the University of the West Indies (UWI, St. Augustine Campus).

The national soil sampling survey was highlighted as “history in the making” because Grenada’s last soil survey was done 64 years ago.

The survey was conducted island wide inclusive of the sister isle Carriacou.

Imhotep Mawuto from the Forestry Department a memeber of the sampling team indicated that the project was welcomed despite the challenges in obtaining some of the points.

The data collected from the survey will help in making informed decisions not only at the policy level but in the field with the farmers as they move towards a more sustainable way of farming.

Extension Officer in the Northern District Jhomo Phillip speaks of his experience.
