Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, is to assume the Chairmanship of the OECS on Friday.

That will be at the opening ceremony of the 70th Meeting of OECS Authority which will be held virtually, under the incoming Chairmanship of Dr. Mitchell.

REPORT:

The Meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the Organization and Dr. Mitchell, as the incoming Chair, will address the opening.

It was on June 18, 1981, when the OECS was created with the leaders of seven Eastern Caribbean States, Grenada included, signing the Treaty of Basseterre and agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among Members; a sub-regional economic framework of a bloc of lesser developed territories.

Today, the number has increased to 11.

The Treaty was named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts/Nevis where it was signed.

The Opening Ceremony of Friday’s meeting will be streamed live from 10 in the morning on the OECS Facebook Page and YouTube Channel.

Following the Opening Ceremony, OECS Leaders will settle into discussion relating to the acceleration of the regional integration effort; recovery support for St. Vincent and the Grenadines in light of the April 9 La Soufreire Volcanic eruption; enhanced cooperation amongst Member States; updates on vaccines; and other key operational matters.

They remain dedicated to economic harmonization and integration, the protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean.
