The Ministry of Health here, says it’s closely monitoring the emergence of monkeypox in neighboring, Trinidad and Tobago.

Health officials in Trinidad confirmed the case two days ago.

As per their established protocols, contact tracing procedures have been initiated to track and contain the spread of the virus.

Monkeypox, can be transmitted to humans through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials such as bedding.

Additionally, it can spread from person to person through direct contact with lesions, body fluids, and respiratory droplets.

The primary symptoms of monkeypox include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

Dr. Shawn Charles, the Chief Medical Officer, has appealed to the public to exercise vigilance and adopt preventive measures.

He emphasizes the importance of physical distancing, frequent hand washing, and sanitization. Additionally, wearing masks is advised when in the presence of individuals from different households.

Dr. Charles also urges caution and advises against contact with people displaying typical skin lesions, including their clothing and bedding, especially with the carnival festive season approaching.

Dr. Charles says there have been no suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox in Grenada, Carriacou, or Petite Martinique. However, it is crucial to stay informed and proactive.

The Ministry of Health says it will remain updated on any further developments and provide credible information through the Government Information Service (GIS) and their social media platforms.

For a comprehensive list of countries affected by monkeypox, individuals are asked to visit the World Health Organization’s website.
