GRENADIAN LAWYER APPEALS TO THE OECS CHIEF JUSTICE FOR ANOTHER JUDGE IN THE HIGH COURT

Grenadian Attorney-At-Law, Anslem Clouden, makes an appeal to the OECS Chief Justice, Dame Janice Pereira, to have another Judge sitting in cases in the criminal jurisdiction of the High court here.

He complains there’s only one judge operating at this time.

Clouden made the appeal yesterday at the closing of the mid-term Assizes.

He believes the burden of one judge in the criminal jurisdiction to deal with matters is against human rights.

Clouden continues to gripe that the matter needs fixing.

Clouden says if the situation remains, there would be a back-log of cases that the sitting Judge may not be able to address expeditiously in the New Law Term.

His plea was supported by his compatriot, Jerry Edwin.

Well, we were privy to statistics yesterday that currently in Grenada there are 376 inmates at His Majesty’s Prison, which, according to officials, range in the area of over-crowding.

The figure includes six females.

Of the total amount, two hundred and sixty-two are Convictions, 38 on Remand, 34 awaiting trial and 41Appellants.

We’ll have more on this story in a subsequent News dispatch.
