The Grenada Union of Teachers has sent out notice inviting members of the general public to participate in what it terms as NATIONAL RED DAY tomorrow.

The notice which was sent out earlier today says Wear red! Anything red! Stand in solidarity in the continued fight for justice.

The union over the last few weeks has been engaged in industrial action over their 4% wage increase.

Retired and current teachers took to the streets of St. George in a march for justice last month.

The peaceful protest saw many teachers dressed in red shirts and displaying placards with justifications for the increase, to press the Government to resolve the matter.

Late last year, the Government informed unions that it would be unable to pay the increase signed in the 2018 collective agreement, because of reducing revenue.

The reduction is being linked directly to measures enforced to deal with Covid-19.

This included a lockdown of the country, which according to the Government’s monthly fiscal report, saw 50% of the revenue projected in the 2020 budget, and further reduction for the year 2021.

Meantime the Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union (GTAWU) is also calling on all of its members and members of the general public to wear something red – Red Union T-shirt, red top or red ribbon – tomorrow, as a show of support and solidarity with Public Sector workers and workers of RBTT Bank Grenada Limited (now ACB Caribbean).
