The minimum wage advisory committee is said to be making significant headway in addressing minimum wage concerns.

Legal Affairs, Labour and Consumer Affairs Minister, Claudette Joseph, says public and stakeholder consultations will be held during the month to determine a decent minimum wage for the country.

It’s understood that that the last minimum wage review was done in 2011.

Claudette Joseph says the government wants to have the issue addressed by January 2024, and, according to her,  “by all indications the committee is on target with the timeline”.

The wage advisory committee was established late last year and is chaired by economist, Dr. Curlan Gilchrist.

The labour minister further explained that the committee intends to broaden the scope of the minimum wage and not have it remain limited to certain occupations.

She says consideration will also be given to the creation of equity among genders and geographic location.
