Meanwhile the Mirabeau Propagation Station is reporting that it has successfully harvested over 2000 pounds of ginger, an initiative aimed at providing additional planting materials to farmers that will ultimately boost production of the crop on the island.
The Ministry is hoping to distribute the plants to farmers before the end of March.
Agronomist Troy Augustine overseeing Ginger Production at the Mirabeau Propagation Station, reported that despite some crops being lost to praedial larceny, the 12,000 square feet germ–plasm plot yielded more than 50crates of ginger a day.
He explained that the Ministry is actively promoting increased ginger production among farmers as part of its efforts to tap into export markets.
Given the upcoming export opportunities, farmers are urged to cultivate quarter-acre plots of ginger and other root crops to meet the anticipated increasing demands.
Augustine emphasized the importance of training for farmers to acquire the necessary skills and techniques required to maximize the yield from ginger cultivation.
