The Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority and the Ministry of Health are to work out logistics in guiding the setting up and operations of scrap metal businesses.
They are due to meet this week on the matter.
This comes against the background of two illegal scrap metal businesses being ordered to cease operations, in view of what’s described as a multi stakeholder engagement involving the Ministry of Climate Resilience, Renewable Energy and the Environment, the Solid Waste Management Authority, the Physical Planning Authority, the Ministry of Health and the RGPF.
The sites located at River Road and Calliste in St. George’s were cordoned off with police caution tape following discussion with the operators, and to await word as to the next course of action.
The action was taken in light of ongoing public health, environmental, aesthetic and traffic concerns emerging from the operations, as well as risks presented to adjoining properties such as fires from burning and exposure of residents and commuters to chemicals and other toxins.
Senior Environmental Health Officer, Dhanraj Ramkelawan, in that report dispatched by the Ministry of Health.
Compliance Manager at the Solid Waste Management Authority, Godfrey Fleming stated that operations of a similar nature will be carried out during the yuletide season as the Authority aims to effect legislation pertaining to improper waste management.
