Tomorrow marks another Thanksgiving Day holiday, remembering the US and regional military rescue team coming to Grenada 40 years ago to crush an RMC rebellion, which brought days of chaos and confusion in the governance of the country.
This was against the background of political infighting in the PRG, which resulted in the death of Prime Minister, Maurice bishop, and several of his Cabinet Colleagues and staunch supporters.
The days of curfew which followed and shoot-on-sight orders kept Grenadians at home bewildered, hoping for some form of intervention to be free.
The Interventionist forces were up to the task and found pockets of resistance in a few areas, until days after when it died down.
It was an occasion when Grenadians breathe a sigh of relief, after being held in bondage.
Through the actions of the interventionist forces which were supported by the then US President Ronald Reagan, Grenada returned slowly to democracy.
In remembrance of the occasion, 40 years on, an Ecumenical Service will be held tomorrow at the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Grand Anse St. George.
It’s put on by the National Celebrations Committee in collaboration with the Conference of Churches in Grenada.
The Thanksgiving Day Service will be guided by the theme, “Remembering: We Dream”.
It begins 10 in the morning and will attended by Officials of the Conference of Churches, Government of Grenada, members of the Private and Public Sectors and several prominent citizens.
An invitation has been sent out to the public to attend the event and to show support for all the families who lost loved ones during that period.
