The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is proud to join with all the people of our nation in congratulating and saluting World Athletics Championship Javelin gold medalist, Anderson Peters, on his phenomenal achievement at the just ended games in Doha.
At 21 years of age, Peters is among an elite group of athletes in the world to win a gold medal in an event second only to the Olympic Games. Undoubtedly this is a great and unique honor for Grenada, and more so an ideal tonic of inspiration for future generations of our sportsmen and women.
NDC also congratulates coach Paul Phillip, who has again demonstrated that he is a world-class coach with a passion for working with young people, Anderson’s parents, the St. David Track Blazers Club, and the University of Mississippi of which he is a student.
NDC also recognizes the performances of Lindon Victor and Kirani James at the World Championship. Although they did not win a medal, both demonstrated they could compete among the best athletes in the world.
Victor finished the first day of the two-day decathlon competition in the top four, and unfortunately, in the discus throw, his three throws were fouls, thus ending his medal prospect. Kirani placed fifth in the final of the 400 meters running a time of 44.59. Having battled an auto-immune disease for the past two years, NDC is delighted to read of Kirani’s recovery.
Kirani is Grenada’s trailblazer being the first person to win gold in the world athletics championship in 2011 and the first Olympic gold medalist in 2012.
NDC wishes these and other athletes and their coaching staff preparing for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo the very best and urge all Grenadians to give them all the support they can.
