Grenada is one of six OECS countries to benefit from a 5.3 million US dollar project seeking to help reduce crime and violence that affects young people particularly between the ages of 15 and 29.

In this regard, the OECS Commission is partnering with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to take bold steps targeted at reducing crime and empowering young people through its latest project, Opportunities to Advance and Support Youth for Success (OASYS).

This project runs through to 2026 and also includes Antigua/Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

It’s geared at diverting children and youth from the formal Court systems, empowering children and youth in conflict with the law through opportunities that support rehabilitation and prepare them for a successful future, and reintegrating youth into their families and communities.

Director General of the OECS Commission, Dr. Didacus Jules, says the OECS Commission and USAID are taking a critical step towards reducing crime and violence in the region and empowering young people to reach their full potential.

A year ago it was noted that overtime some 200 children here who have been in conflict with the law were rehabilitated on account of the Juvenile Justice Reform Project, as we hear from Programme Manager of the Grand Bacolet Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre, Melisse Ogilvie.

One of the inmates spoke in glaring terms as to the role of the Centre in his life.
