The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) congratulates Grenada on its 50th Independence anniversary.

A virtual flag-raising ceremony was held by the Commission to commemorate the occasion.

The ceremony featured remarks from Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, as well as remarks from the Director General of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules.

In his address, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell noted the theme of the observance capturing the strength  and resilience of Grenadians, encapsulating the country’s rich history, and one that encourages citizens to envision the next fifty years and beyond with optimism and a great love for beautiful Grenada.

He says the nation stands on the shoulders of giants who have served as beacons paving the way for the Grenadian people to dream big and press forward with the driving force of building the nation, reflecting on shortcomings and proudly celebrating triumphs.

OECS Director-General, Dr. Didacus Jules, extended congratulations saying 50 years is a remarkable milestone, not just a celebration of the past, but a re-affirmation of commitment to the theme “One People, One Journey, One Future”.

He says on 7th February, 1974, Grenada embarked on a tumultuous journey as an independent nation, a journey filled with challenges and triumphs, testament to the resilience, strength and unity of the Grenadian people.

“We have weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, and emerged stronger; united in our diversity and rich heritage, and strengthened by the adversity we have overcome,” Dr. Didicus Jules speaking.

The vision of the forbearers, he says, courage and determination have paved the way for the freedoms and opportunities Grenadians enjoy today.
