OPPOSITION MP, PETER DAVID, ADVISES THE GOVERNMENT TO CHECK THE CARICOM COMMISSION FOR DIALOGUE ON THE COMP-LEX MATTER OF CANNIBIS LEGALIZATION

Opposition MP, Representing the Town of St. George, and former Minister of Government, Peter David, wants the Dickon Mitchell-led government to seek dialogue with the CARICOM Commission, as it relates the legalization/decriminalization of Cannabis.

It has been one of the campaign promises of the National Democratic Congress and since winning the general elections of June 2022, moves have been made with the setting up of a Commission here to look into the process, but there have been little reports about any advances made.

During debate on the 2024 Budget in the House of Representatives, Peter David noted the complexity of the cannabis legalization/decriminalization story, being familiar with the intricacies, as he was the man who was upfront in the previous government responsible for bringing forward legislation on the issue to Parliament for first reading, followed by nationwide consultation.

He directed the Government how best to go about the issue by at least checking in with the CARICOM Commission on Cannibis as an important step.

David calls on the ruling administration to focus particularly on what needs to be done in addressing the legalization/decriminalization of Cannabis.
