Opposition Senator, Neilon Franklyn, making his contribution in the Upper House on the 2023 Budget, hits out at the plethora of taxes to be implemented by the Government next year.
He believes they could have a debilitating effect on the life of the middle and lower income bracket of the society and called for alternative measures.
Franklyn says while he understands the question of health being a factor, and in the case of alcohol and cigarettes, he doesn’t believe the measure will attain its desired goal, as well as addressing the issue of non-communicable diseases, in the case of sugar intake.
He believes a measure of education could be the right first step.
As it relates to the proposed tax amnesty, Franklyn categorically states his opposition to the measure, which he stated did not meet its objective when it was implemented under the former NDC administration in 2009.
