PRIME MINISTER NOT ATTENDING SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS BECAUSE OF GRENADA’S ELECTION TIME

It’s been said that Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, will not be attending the Summit of the Americas, which officially began yesterday.

The Summit of the Americas is said to have come at a time, when Grenada is into another general election cycle and Dr. Mitchell and the incumbent NNP’s quest for another term to govern the country.

Dr. Mitchell is leading his New National Party in the charge.

However, Grenada is being represented at the Summit by Health Minister, Nikolas Steele, accompanied by Ambassador to the United States, Yolande Smith.

Prior to the start of the Summit, there’s been a measure of uncertainty whether countries within the region were opting out of the Summit because of the refusal of the Biden administration to invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Debate in that sphere raged on for a while and today only two leaders are known to be absent from the Summit, Dr. Mitchell who’s engaged in election campaigning here and Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Dr. Gonsalves publicly indicated he would not attend because of the situation regarding Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

The Grenadian, leader, however, while taken up in his party’s election campaigning, noted that his government’s foreign policy stance is clear and is doubtful about that of the NDC.

Dr. Mitchell says their stance is based on a position of principle, and as important as it is it’s different to that of their opponents.
