Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has  received an update on the work of the Grenada Red Cross Society (GRCS), as the society  through its auxiliary role to Government, aims to strengthen programmes by providing  support in the areas of youth, health and disaster management.

Red Cross President, Ms. Samantha Dickson, at a recent meeting with the Prime Minister,  spoke of the extensive work they have been doing in the community and in collaboration  with various ministries.

In addition to its traditional work, the Grenada Red Cross has also become involved in  the fight against COVID-19. The COVID-19 Operations, funded through the International  Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Global Appeal and other  donors, has enabled the local Red Cross to distribute food and hygiene packages to 1,000  persons, procure personal protective equipment and install hand-washing stations. Soon,  the GRCS will donate thermometers to all primary schools.

The Grenada Red Cross Society has also undertaken a Zika-prevention project, during  which 32 communities received capacity building through education and the formation of  community groups. Residents were also taught how to store water safely.

Ms. Dickson indicated that the GRCS Strategic Plan 2030 has also been developed to  guide the society’s work as it keeps abreast of the demands in the humanitarian sector.

The Prime Minister has commended the Grenada Red Cross Society for the significant  strides made and for its continued dedication to making a difference. He said, “The value  of the work of the Grenada Red Cross Society should not be underestimated. They have  consistently partnered with Government on programmes and initiatives to better serve the  community.”

The Government of Grenada provides an annual subvention to the Grenada Red Cross  Society and Dr. Mitchell gave assurances of Government’s commitment to continue  supporting and collaborating with the Red Cross in whatever way possible.
