Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, says he remains committed to introducing a Freedom of Information Act, as well as a Media Policy.
This is stated in the final report by the Media Workers Association of Grenada, out of a recent high level meeting with Prime Minister Mitchell, under whose portfolio Information falls.
The Prime Minister is said to have acceded to MWAG’s request for more consultations, noting the need to dispel the concerns of the public as well as those of various stakeholder groups.
Regarding the issue of restricting access to information; whether by a lack of avenues or platforms to engage government officials or receiving responses to requests or questions posed, Prime Minister Mitchell reportedly accepted the suggestion to further engage with MWAG to determine the best intervals for hosting press-related conferences and releasing information to the media.
MWAG’s executive advocated for the use of mainstream media rather than social media, as has become the norm for the new administration.
Among other matters, the two parties looked at the Data Protection Bill and restrictions concerning access to information related to national development and national relevance.
The meeting was held on the 24th of last month.
