The Ministry Of Agriculture continues with its thrust to encourage sustainable agriculture and food security in backyard gardening.
It’s an initiative undertaken with assistance from the Climate Resilient Agriculture (CRA) project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the Climate Smart Agriculture and Rural Enterprise Project (SAEP).
A demonstration relative to best practices for sustainable seedling propagation was conducted yesterday at the Southern Agricultural District Office at La Sagesse, St. David.
In attendance were backyard gardeners, small-holder farmers and members of 4H Units of the various schools, witnessing the proper way to propagate seedlings in trays.
Supervisor of the Southern Agricultural District, Rawl Lewis, spoke of the Ministry of Agriculture’s thrust to encourage food and nutrition security and identified the initiative that would persuade individuals to eat what they grow.
The demonstration was followed by the distribution of tomato, cabbage, lettuce, beans, ochra and sweet pepper seedlings, as explained by Aiden Forteau– Sustainable Land Management Specialist at the UNDP.
Climate Smart Agriculture Co-ordinatorat SAEP, Kenly Edwards, says this initiative provides smallholder farmers, students within the 4H unit and backyard farmers access to quality seedlings.
