Efforts are said to be underway to conduct a survey to determine the current population of the Grenada Dove (Leptotila-Wellsi) by the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Grenada Dove is one of the birds listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Critically Endangered.

The survey, according to ministry of Agriculture officials, will be used to collect data to develop a strategy to control or minimize some of the activities which may impact the Grenadian Dove Population.

A two-member team from the Forestry Department, earlier this week, visited the Mt. Hartman Dove Sanctuary, one of the homes for the Grenada Dove.

Forest Ranger, Shawn Philbert.

Another Forest Ranger, Dolland Francis, is happy the department has decided to conduct the survey.

The Mt. Hartman Estate, one of only two locations in the World where the Grenada Dove can be found, was transformed over the past years to include an education and outreach center where persons can find information about the Dove, along with touring the Sanctuary.

Peter Plenty the tour guide at the Sanctuary describes the survey by the Forestry Department as an important step to save the National Dove.
