PR – Sporting associations have begun shaping Grenada’s 2027 sports agenda through a workshop focused on funding priorities, accountability and the development of a coordinated national sports calendar.
The Sports Funding Retreat and National Sports Calendar Planning Workshop was convened by the Grenada National Sports Council (NSC), the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Lottery Authority (NLA) at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium.
The workshop brought together representatives of sporting associations to strengthen funding proposals and align their plans with the Government’s budget process. Participants also began developing the 2027 National Sports Calendar to improve coordination, reduce duplication and expand opportunities for athletes and communities across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Kim Frederick, outlined the Government’s expectations for strategic planning, prioritisation, accountability and the responsible use of public resources.
Frederick explained that funding requests must be considered within the Government’s wider budgetary and fiscal framework and aligned with national and ministerial priorities. She urged sporting associations to rank their programmes and competitions realistically, recognising that available resources may not support every proposed activity.
“The workshop helps to guide the principles for sourcing funding for our sporting associations. By strengthening the way we plan, prioritise and utilise available resources, we are ultimately strengthening our sporting organisations and the communities they serve,” Frederick said.
She also stressed that organisations receiving public funds must submit proper reports and supporting documentation showing how those funds were used. This, she said, is essential to transparency, future planning and public confidence in sports funding.
Discussions encouraged associations to develop sustainable programmes with clear results, use limited resources effectively and strengthen cooperation across the sector.
NSC Chairman Patrick Simmons said the workshop marked an important step towards more coordinated investment in sport.
“The success of sport development depends on strong partnerships, clear planning and a shared vision. This workshop allowed stakeholders to come together, identify priorities and lay the foundation for a more structured and sustainable sporting programme in 2027,” Simmons said.
NSC Chief Executive Officer Alvin Clouden welcomed the strong participation and called for continued collaboration.
“The discussions held during the workshop demonstrated a collective commitment to advancing sport in Grenada. By working together and aligning our efforts, we can build stronger programmes, reduce duplication, maximise resources and deliver greater benefits to athletes and communities,” Clouden said.
The workshop’s outcomes will guide the completion of the 2027 National Sports Calendar and inform future funding priorities. The process forms part of a broader national effort to improve sports planning and ensure that public investment delivers measurable benefits for athletes and communities.
