Prime Minister Of Grenada, Dr. Keith Mitchell and Caribbean Leaders, at a special emergency meeting, have expressed being shocked and saddened over the assassination of the President of Haiti, a member of the CARICOM family.
REPORT:
Moise was gunned down during the early hours yesterday morning, somewhere around 1 o’clock.
His wife is seriously wounded.
Expressing concern over her condition, the regional leaders wish her a full and speedy recovery.
Heads of Government strongly condemn the attack as “abhorrent and reprehensible” coming at a time of deep turmoil and institutional weakness in the country.
They called for the perpetrators to be apprehended and brought to justice, and for law and order to prevail.
News out of Haiti is that four of the attackers have been killed by Police and two have been apprehended.
Discussing the situation in Haiti, which is moreso socio-political and economic, Dr. Mitchell and his counterparts noted strongly the values under the CARICOM Charter of
Civil Society, where the Community does not settle its differences by violence, since it only serves to undermine democracy and the rule of law.
They express settling differences peacefully through dialogue and recourse to democratic institutions.
In light of Haiti’s Membership of CARICOM and the family ties that bind the people of Haiti and CARICOM together, CARICOM, in its statement, expresses willingness to play a lead role in facilitating a process of national dialogue and negotiation, to help the Haitian people and their institutions craft an indigenous solution to the crisis.
In the mainstream, the CARICOM Leaders call on the people of Haiti to remain calm, and to overcome their differences and unite at this moment of national peril.
As a mark of respect, the Member States of the Community and the CARICOM Secretariat will fly their national flags and the CARICOM Standard at half-mast for three days, as well as on the day of the funeral of President Moise.
