When speaking of Grenadaโs Independence, one name that will always come to mind is Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, who, being Premier of the country at the time, spearheaded the struggle with the British colonial political powers for Grenada to control its own administrative affairs.
Here at home, it was also a time of political rancor, spearheaded by opposition political forces.
They were not in agreement with Independence under Sir Eric, who they were aware would become the countryโs first Prime Ministerโฆso much so, Grenadaโs Independent flag was hoisted at midnight into independence day under makeshift masanto lights at Fort George, on account of the strike protest within the electricity company.
Grenada was shrouded in darkness.
With the 50th Independence anniversary 2024, a period or a milestone to behold, we have been able to put our hands on Sir Ericโs address to a joint sitting of the Grenada Parliament, with British parliamentary officials and other dignitaries of foreign countries who joined in on the independence occasion.
Yesterday on Weefm radio, we brought you Part 5 in the series we have been presenting and today we continueโฆPart 6 of the Independence Day address by Sir Eric Matthew Gairy.
