Under the project ‘Practical Climate Change Adaptation in Fisheries Interventions in Grenada,’ nineteen (19) Fisherfolks from St. George spent last week learning necessary information in several areas including seamanship, boat handling, safety at sea and use of GPS.
The exercise promotes the protection of lives and livelihoods of fisherfolks- as it is expected to contribute to reducing the loss of life/property and the number of safety-related incidences that occur within the fishing industry annually.
The training was organised by the Fisheries Department with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Windward Island Research & Education Foundation (Windref) at St George’s University (SGU) and the European Union Funded Biodiversity Support for ACP Coastal Environments (#BIOSPACE) Project.
At the end of the training (last Friday), participants who met the minimum training standards were issued with a Level II Fishing Captain’s Permit.
