Grenada and the rest of the Caribbean, on this World day of Social Justice, take a look at the region and whether its positioning itself for its people and future.
The occasion was designated by the United Nations with a General Assembly declaration that from the 63rd session, February 20 will be celebrated annually as the World Day of Social Justice.
On this score, the President of the Caribbean Congress of Labour, Grenada’s Andre Lewis, publishes a statement for more to be cone considering the plight of humanity.
Taking into consideration the World’s economic plight and surrounding circumstances, the Millenium Development goals have morphed into the Sustainable Development Goals, and it is highly unlikely that even the modest objective s outlined will be attained in the next seven years.
All of this, Lewis says, is a World where there are enough resources to truly ensure that every man, woman and child has enough to eat, has adequate shelter and where every child can be educated.
According to him, it is clear that the system is stacked against working people and others vulnerable in society and it is clear that only the most moderate efforts will be made by those best-placed to secure social justice and equity as a global reality.
The region’s chief trade unionist says “it therefore rests with each of us in whatever sphere of influence we find ourselves to make our best contribution to human rights”.
Lewis says the region people are still plagued
with unacceptable levels of poverty and even indigence; there are still children going to bed at night with hungry bellies; still have people who have
worked hard for their whole lives unable to experience dignity when they can no longer work; there are still people working full-time, yet unable to meet even their basic needs; still have too many young people unable to find meaningful employment ; and sadly, there are still unjust societies.
The CCL President says there are persons placed in positions of leadership in the Caribbean who have
an opportunity to make the countries and the region on noasis of human solidarity.
He’s asking for a commitment to the cause of social justice.
