The Grenada House of Representatives today passed legislation increasing the compulsory age for school children and their education in schools from 16 to 17 years inclusively.
This is to take effect at the first day of September this year.
The Bill in this regard, which seeks to amend the Education Act Chapter 86, was presented by the Leader of Government Business, Phillip Telesford.
This is the way he explained it, indicating that a child has to remain in school until age 18. Opposition MP, Emmalin Pierre, a former Education Minister, in debate on the legislation, believes the changing measure has come abruptly without relevant stakeholder consultation.
Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, supports the idea of encouraging the skills set of the Nation’s youth.
Prime Minister Mitchell says it’s a situation where the youths will not be placed at a disadvantage.
