In his 2023 Independence Message, Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Mitchell, says Grenadians have much to be proud of as the country journeys onward to 50.

He says the contributions and achievements of the nation’s brothers and sisters in areas such as sports, culture, academia, and diplomacy are well documented locally, regionally, and internationally.

According to him, so too, are the economic development gains and the trademark resilience as a people.

REPORT:

Our beloved country has recorded significant progress over the last four decades, the sentiments of Dr. Mitchell.

He says the path has never been an easy one and though the challenges have been many, we continue to soldier on tirelessly through it all, triumphant and proud.

Dr. Mitchell noted unprecedented events unfolding the world over in recent past, all of which have affected us one way or another and that of the enormity of the Covid-19 pandemic which has shaken the country and people to its very core, especially as it concerns loss of lives, severe economic and financial shocks, supply chain disruptions, and skyrocketing increases in cost of living, in a post COVID World.

Dr. Mitchell went on to say here at home, the poor and vulnerable population has been hit hardest, many have lost their jobs and many are unable to access support.

He further states that most recently, the social protection afforded to those most vulnerable in the Grenadian community has been drastically weakened, and in some cases removed, describing it as an economically challenging time.

Now more than ever, as a people, the Opposition Leader says, and I quote, “We must do what is necessary, what we must, and be our brothers’ keeper for ours is a history of love for our people and as we forge ahead to 50, no one must be left behind.” Unquote.
