Grenada and other countries in the region have been advised now is the time to empower farmers and food producers, particularly women.

This is as CARICOM reaches the halfway point of its 25% by 2025 target aimed at reducing the regional food bill.

CARICOM’s Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett has acknowledged the progress made since the launch of the initiative in 2018, despite some setbacks.

She says member states have been working to create an enabling environment for inclusive resilient agriculture and food sectors.

Dr. Barnett’s comments came at the opening of the 17th Caribbean Week of Agriculture currently underway in the Bahamas.

Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis says the Caribbean is poised to see an agricultural boom.

Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean with the Food and Agriculture Organization, Dr. Renata Clarke welcomed the drive and attention paid on agriculture and its transformation.
